Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France's vastest region, lists 677 wateside campsites, among the country's most significant offerings. Sea dominates with 342 establishments, along Atlantic coast, from Charente-Maritime to Landes via Arcachon Basin.
River is a very important component with 207 campsites, supported by dense hydrographic network: Dordogne, Vézère, Lot or Garonne, structuring particularly Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne departments. Lake adds 107 establishments, particularly in Landes, where many coastal lakes like Hourtin-Carcans border the ocean, and pond completes with 47 campsites.
This diversity, sea, river and lake at almost equal significant shares, illustrates Nouvelle-Aquitaine's extent, ranging from Atlantic coast to Perigord and Limousin borders, with particularly dense offering in Charente-Maritime, Dordogne and Landes.
Nouvelle-Aquitaine offers one of France's longest coasts, from Arcachon Basin and its Pilat dune, Europe's highest dune, to Basque Coast and Biarritz's beaches, passing Île de Ré and Île d'Oléron, both linked to mainland by bridge.
The region retains major prehistoric heritage in Dordogne, with Lascaux cave and Vézère valley, UNESCO World Heritage classified, as well as historic cities like Bordeaux, itself UNESCO-listed for its eighteenth-century urban ensemble, or La Rochelle and its old fortified port with two famous towers.
Bordeaux vineyards, Landes pine forests, Europe's largest cultivated forest massif, and Basque Country seaside resorts complete this region's diversity, between ocean, Perigord rivers and Pyrenean foothills. Poitiers town, with its Futuroscope park, among France's most-visited tourist sites, completes the diversity in the region's north.
