Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a Basque Country seaside resort whose eight listed campsites are all by the sea. The bay, largely enclosed by breakwaters, offers a sheltered beach particularly popular with families.
Camping in Saint-Jean-de-Luz means enjoying a still-active fishing harbour, specialised in tuna and anchovy, just steps from a large fine sandy beach. The town keeps a strong Basque identity, visible in its architecture, its red half-timbered façades and its covered market.
The town faces Ciboure across the harbour, and lies right next to the Spanish border, making it a practical base for exploring the whole Basque coast while camping.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz owes part of its fame to the wedding of Louis XIV and the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain, celebrated in 1660 in the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, the largest Basque church in France, recognisable by its stacked wooden galleries. The Maison Louis-XIV, on the square, can be visited and recalls this historic episode.
The fishing harbour, one of the most important on the Basque coast, still has genuine activity around tuna and anchovy, and its quays remain lively at the end of the day. Across the water, the small harbour of Ciboure was the birthplace of composer Maurice Ravel.
Fans of Basque pelota will find frontons all over town, a sport that is part and parcel of local identity. On clear days, the silhouette of La Rhune, an iconic Basque Country mountain, stands out clearly to the south.
