Hendaye, at the very southern tip of the Basque Country, marks the border with Spain: the town looks across at Hondarribia on the other side of the Bidasoa, at the far end of the Basque coast. The town benefits from a sheltered setting between the Atlantic Ocean and the Basque Corniche, with wilder coves closer to the border. It's a highly sought-after camping destination on the Basque coast, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, between a large family-friendly beach and coastal paths towards the Corniche.
Hendaye's large beach stretches for nearly three kilometres of fine sand, lined by a promenade seawall popular for seafront walks. It's one of the widest beaches on the Basque coast, known for its gentle slope, well suited to families.
To the south, the Basque Corniche offers a spectacular coastal path between cliffs and coves, all the way to the Spanish border marked by the Bidasoa. The Château d'Abbadia, a nineteenth-century neo-Gothic manor perched on the Corniche, can be visited and overlooks the ocean with its distinctive architecture. Hendaye's old town, more low-key, keeps the character of a traditional Basque village, away from the bustle of the seafront.
