Everything about the campsites by the water in Socoa

Socoa, a maritime district of the town of Ciboure, occupies a remarkable position at the entrance to the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, at the very southern tip of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Camping fits naturally here by the sea: most of the establishments listed benefit from direct or close access to the Atlantic Ocean, on this Basque coast where the breakwater and rocky coves shape a coastline of contrasts, between a sheltered beach and a stronger swell further out.

People camp here for the ocean light and Basque atmosphere, just a few minutes' walk from Ciboure's fishing harbour and the lively centre of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The area draws in families looking for a quiet beach as much as board-sport enthusiasts, the bay being known for surfing, paddleboarding and light sailing.

With a limited number of listed addresses, Socoa remains a niche camping destination, more low-key than its Saint-Jean-de-Luz neighbours, but one that benefits from the same Basque hinterland, between nearby mountains and the ocean.

to discover

What to see and do in Socoa

Socoa is recognisable from afar by its fort, built in the seventeenth century on the orders of Vauban to protect the entrance to the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz from English and Spanish attacks. The breakwater that reaches out into the ocean offers an open view over the Basque coast, from the Pointe Sainte-Barbe to the Pyrenean foothills that plunge almost into the sea.

The nearby fishing harbour of Ciboure keeps up its activity and its traditional Basque houses with red or green shutters, in the same Labourdin style also found in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, across the bay. The Socoa area is also a recognised spot for water sports, particularly surfing and stand-up paddleboarding, thanks to a steady swell and often favourable wind.

Hikers will find the first foothills of the inland Basque Country nearby, with coastal paths that run along the corniche all the way to the Spanish border. Enough to alternate, within a single stay, between sea swims and walks between cliffs and mountains.

our method

How we select every campsite

1

A verified criterion, not a promise

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.

2

Reputation, backed by reviews

We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.

3

Direct booking, transparent pricing

You book directly with the campsite, no middleman or hidden markup. The price shown is the price you pay.
