Everything about the campsites by the water in Biarritz

People camp in Biarritz for this strong ocean identity, between large beaches exposed to the Atlantic swell and rocks that carve up the coastline. The campsite benefits from direct access to the sea, in a town that remains one of the most recognised addresses on the Basque coast.

Between nineteenth-century seaside heritage and a well-established surf culture, Biarritz combines history and board sports, a dual identity that makes it one of the most complete destinations on the Basque coast. The 4 campsites listed all benefit from this direct access to the sea, a sought-after position in one of the most recognised resorts on the Basque coast, popular both in and out of peak holiday season.

What to see and do in Biarritz

Biarritz developed as a seaside resort under the Second Empire, when Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie had a villa built there that launched the fashion for sea bathing among European high society. This history is still reflected in the Belle Époque architecture of several buildings in the centre.

The Grande Plage, right in the heart of town, remains Biarritz's best-known image, flanked by the casino and the Hôtel du Palais, built on the former site of the empress's villa. The Rocher de la Vierge, linked to the shore by a footbridge, offers an open view over the Bay of Biscay.

Biarritz is also considered the birthplace of surfing in Europe, a sport introduced on its beaches in the 1950s that has remained deeply rooted in local identity ever since, with numerous surf schools set up along the coast. Surf competitions regularly held on its beaches keep this reputation alive well beyond French borders.

our method

How we select every campsite

1

A verified criterion, not a promise

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.

2

Reputation, backed by reviews

We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.

3

Direct booking, transparent pricing

You book directly with the campsite, no middleman or hidden markup. The price shown is the price you pay.
