Royan, in the Charente-Maritime department, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a seaside resort built facing the Gironde estuary. The eight campsites listed here are all by the sea, benefiting from the large sandy beaches that have made the town's reputation for more than a century.
The town was almost entirely rebuilt after the bombings of 1945, giving it a distinctive look shaped by 1950s architecture. Camping in Royan means enjoying a wide choice of beaches, from the Grande Conche in the town centre to more intimate coves towards Pontaillac, with the mouth of the Gironde and its passing boats as a backdrop.
The town remains a practical starting point for exploring the whole Charente-Maritime coast, between neighbouring resorts and large beaches open onto the Atlantic.
Royan stands out for its postwar reconstruction architecture, symbolised by the Notre-Dame church, a concrete work by Guillaume Gillet, whose sawtooth façade and large stained-glass window are well worth seeing. The covered market hall, also inherited from this period, is worth a visit for its bold roof structure.
The seafront and the Boulevard de la Côte de Beauté offer a long promenade between the town's different beaches, from Pontaillac to the Grande Conche. Boat excursions regularly leave Royan for the Cordouan lighthouse, a UNESCO World Heritage site, standing offshore at the entrance to the estuary.
The town also makes the most of its position at the mouth of the Gironde to run crossings to the Pointe de Grave, on the Médoc side, an easy way to change shores for the day.
