Meschers-sur-Gironde, in the Charente-Maritime department, is a town set on the cliffs overlooking the Gironde estuary, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, a few kilometres from Royan. The four campsites listed are all linked to the sea, in keeping with this estuary-side position, one of the largest river mouths in Europe, where the river already meets maritime influence.
Camping in Meschers-sur-Gironde means enjoying a distinctive coastline, between limestone cliffs hollowed with caves and small sheltered beaches, different from the long straight sandy beaches found further south on the Landes coast. Being close to Royan makes it easy to round out a stay focused on this natural heritage.
Meschers-sur-Gironde is known for its troglodyte caves carved into the limestone cliff overlooking the estuary, including the Grotte de Régulus, long associated with legends of smugglers and pirates said to have used these caves as a hideout. Some caves can be visited today and tell this local story.
The neighbouring village of Talmont-sur-Gironde, perched on a rocky headland above the estuary with its church set almost at the cliff's edge, is one of the most photographed sites in Charente-Maritime and is easily visited from Meschers. Royan, with its post-war reconstruction architecture and beaches, rounds out the possible excursions in this part of the Gironde estuary.
