La Palmyre, in the Charente-Maritime department, is known well beyond the region for its zoo, one of the most visited in France, set in the heart of the pine forest that lines the town. The seven campsites listed here on this portal are all linked to the sea, in keeping with this seaside resort built facing the ocean, at the tip of the Arvert peninsula.
The town benefits from a large fine sandy beach sheltered by the Coubre forest and a mild oceanic climate. It's a very popular camping destination in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, between the Atlantic coast, state-owned forest and closeness to Royan.
La Palmyre zoo, open since the 1960s, spans several dozen hectares within the pine forest and ranks among the most visited animal parks in France, with a wide diversity of species presented in a wooded setting rather than in classic enclosures.
The Coubre forest, which surrounds the resort, offers kilometres of shaded cycle paths between maritime pines and dunes, all the way to the Coubre lighthouse overlooking the Gironde estuary on one side and the ocean on the other. La Palmyre's large beach, well exposed, remains popular for swimming and water sports. Between a well-known animal park, state-owned forest and a large Atlantic beach, La Palmyre brings together several draws of the Charente coast.
