the guide

Everything about the campsites by the water in Ars-en-Ré

Ars-en-Ré lies on the Île de Ré, in the Charente-Maritime department, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The campsite listed here enjoys access to the sea, on an island known for its salt-marsh landscapes and unspoilt beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean.

People camp in Ars-en-Ré for this distinctive island setting, with its Ré light and cycling as the preferred way of getting around the whole island. The campsite benefits from being close to the sea while staying away from the bustle of some of Ré's busier towns.

Between salt marshes still in operation and a typical village of white houses with green shutters, Ars-en-Ré remains one of the most characteristic addresses on the Île de Ré for a stay geared towards the sea and calm. The campsite listed enjoys direct access to the coast, in a town where traffic is still largely dominated by bicycles rather than cars, as everywhere else on the Île de Ré.

What to see and do in Ars-en-Ré

Ars-en-Ré is instantly recognisable thanks to its black-and-white bell tower, a navigation landmark used for generations by sailors to find their bearings offshore. The Saint-Étienne church it belongs to overlooks a village of white houses with the green shutters typical of the Île de Ré.

The village is built around its drying harbour, where activity is still governed by the tides, and its salt marshes, where salt workers still harvest salt using traditional methods. These marshes, now also a protected area for birds, can be explored on foot or by bike.

The Île de Ré can be explored almost entirely by bike thanks to an extensive network of cycle paths, a way to discover Ars-en-Ré and the neighbouring towns without depending on a car. The contrast between the village's white lanes and the flat expanses of the marshes gives the town a very distinctive identity. The local markets, busy from early morning, round out the atmosphere of this village geared towards fishing and salt.

our method

How we select every campsite

1

A verified criterion, not a promise

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.

2

Reputation, backed by reviews

We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.

3

Direct booking, transparent pricing

You book directly with the campsite, no middleman or hidden markup. The price shown is the price you pay.
