La Tremblade, in the Charente-Maritime department, faces the Île d'Oléron across the Marennes-Oléron basin, one of the main oyster-farming basins in France. The Coubre forest, which stretches over the Arvert point, offers long shaded cycle paths between maritime pines and dunes all the way to the ocean. Nearby, the Coubre lighthouse marks the boundary between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic. Between oyster-farming tradition, state-owned forest and wild beaches, La Tremblade offers a more authentic face of the Charente coast than the larger neighbouring resorts.
