Biscarrosse, in the Landes department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is one of the rare towns on the Atlantic coast offering a genuine choice between sea and lake: of the ten campsites listed, seven sit on a lake and five on the ocean, with some establishments even benefiting from both shores. A split that shapes the town's whole holiday identity.
On the ocean side, long sandy beaches lined with dunes and pine trees make surfers happy. On the lake side, the Étang de Cazaux-Sanguinet and the Étang de Biscarrosse-Parentis, among the largest natural lakes in France, offer calmer water, ideal for sailing, paddleboarding or family swimming.
This dual character allows for a tailor-made stay: days riding waves, quiet afternoons by the lake, all set within the forest landscape typical of the Landes.
Biscarrosse has a history tied to aviation: in the 1930s the town was a major seaplane base, home to the Latécoère factories, and the Musée de l'Hydraviation today retraces this era on the shores of the Étang de Biscarrosse-Parentis. It's one of the few museums of its kind in Europe.
The lake is also home to a very active water sports centre, while the ocean beach, several kilometres long, is known for its surf spots, particularly around the main beach and the point. The pine forest that separates the ocean from the lakes can be explored by bike along well-laid-out cycle paths.
Between dunes, forest and wetlands, the town is also a starting point for exploring the Courant d'Huchet, a small protected natural river that links the Étang de Léon to the ocean a little further south, a landmark feature of the Landes coastline.
