Labenne-Océan, on the Landes coast, is part of the town of Labenne, between Bayonne and Capbreton. Here, the Atlantic Ocean dominates the camping landscape: the three establishments listed are all facing the coast, with direct or quick access to the beach. This is a stretch of coast that's still fairly wild, protected by a belt of wooded dunes, before the coastline becomes more built up towards Capbreton and Hossegor.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and the Landes department built their camping reputation on this trio of ocean, pines and fine sand, and Labenne-Océan is a fairly quiet variation on that theme. People camp here for the rhythm of the tides, the long supervised beaches in summer and being right next to better-known surf spots, without the tourist density of their neighbouring resorts.
Labenne-Océan owes its identity to its ocean beach, lined by a dune massif planted with maritime pines that shelters the hinterland from westerly winds. The Landes forest begins almost at the doorstep of the houses, offering shaded walking and cycling routes that join the Vélodyssée, the cycle path that runs the whole length of the Atlantic coast.
A few kilometres away, Capbreton and its fishing harbour, then Hossegor and its saltwater lake known for surfing, form the lively heart of this stretch of the Landes coast. Labenne-Océan benefits from this closeness without the bustle: people mainly come here for the beach, the forest and the calm of a resort that stays human in scale, far from the crowds further south around Bayonne and Biarritz.
