Lège-Cap-Ferret, in the Gironde department, occupies the peninsula that closes off the Arcachon basin, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The ten campsites listed are all linked to the sea, in keeping with a town bordered on one side by the Atlantic Ocean and on the other by the basin, a fairly unique geographical position on the Aquitaine coast.
Camping in Lège-Cap-Ferret means enjoying ocean access with a view over the Dune du Pilat on the other side of the basin, in a setting of pine forest and oyster-farming villages that have largely shaped the peninsula's identity. The town remains one of the most sought-after destinations on the Arcachon basin for its unspoilt natural setting.
The Cap Ferret lighthouse, at the tip of the peninsula, offers a panorama over the entrance to the Arcachon basin and over the Dune du Pilat, visible on the other side of the channel. The oyster-farming villages that dot the inner shore, such as Le Canon, still have colourful huts typical of the local oyster tradition.
On the ocean side, L'Horizon's wild beach stretches for several kilometres of sand facing the Atlantic, very different from the calmer atmosphere on the basin side. The pine forest that covers the interior of the peninsula links these two frontages via a network of cycle paths popular for exploring Lège-Cap-Ferret without a car.
