Bordeaux, in the Gironde department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is above all a major city, but the campsites listed under this name mostly serve as bases for reaching the water: three of the four establishments face the sea and one a lake, a sign that people come here to enjoy the Atlantic coast and the bodies of water around Bordeaux rather than for a purely urban stay.
From Bordeaux, the ocean and the resorts of the Arcachon basin or the Médoc coast are less than an hour's drive away, as are some Landes or Gironde lakes that offer a calmer alternative for swimming and water sports.
Staying around Bordeaux therefore often means combining both worlds: the life of a World Heritage-listed city and quick access to the beaches and bodies of water that have made the region's reputation.
Bordeaux itself is best explored along the Garonne, along its quays redeveloped into a continuous promenade. Place de la Bourse with its water mirror, the Pont de Pierre, the Cité du Vin dedicated to the region's wine-growing history, and the World Heritage-listed historic centre form a dense, coherent urban whole.
The city also remains the gateway to the Bordeaux vineyards, with the appellations of Médoc, Graves or Saint-Émilion less than an hour away. To the west, the Landes de Gascogne forest and the Atlantic coast complete the picture.
Between eighteenth-century architectural heritage, a lively food scene and close proximity to the great natural spaces of the Gironde, Bordeaux works as much as a starting point as a destination in its own right.
