The Dune du Pyla, in the Gironde department, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, owes its name to the tallest sand dune in Europe, which overlooks the Arcachon basin and the Atlantic Ocean. Four camping establishments are listed in this area, benefiting from direct sea access, complemented by the closeness of a small watercourse that joins the basin.

The Grande Dune du Pilat, standing more than a hundred metres tall, offers from its summit an exceptional panorama over the Arcachon basin, the Landes pine forest and the Atlantic Ocean. It's the most visited natural site in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, reachable on foot via a staircase built into its side.
At the foot of the dune, the Arcachon basin is home to the Banc d'Arguin, a nature reserve popular with migratory birds, as well as numerous oyster beds that have built the area's gastronomic reputation. The state-owned forest surrounding the dune, planted in the nineteenth century to hold back the sands, also offers many paths for extending the walk away from the sand and the summer crowds.
The basin's oyster-farming villages, with their colourful huts, round out the discovery of an area shared between ocean, dune and oysters. The boat crossing to Cap Ferret, on the other side of the basin, naturally extends a visit to the Grande Dune.
