Lacanau, in the Gironde department, cultivates a dual identity fairly rare on the Atlantic coast: Lacanau-Océan, facing the waves, and Lake Lacanau, a freshwater body a few kilometres inland. Between the two, the village of Lacanau keeps a more authentic centre, a practical starting point for exploring the Médoc vineyards or heading up towards the tip of the Médoc.
