Occitanie tops French regions with 682 listed wateside campsites. Contrary to what its Mediterranean coast might suggest, river dominates with 316 establishments, supported by exceptionally dense network: Tarn and its gorges, Aveyron, Lot, Garonne or Hérault.
Sea follows with 231 campsites, along Lion Gulf coast, from Gardoise Camargue to Vermilion Coast, in Gard, Hérault, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales. Mediterranean coast, from Gardoise Camargue to Vermilion Coast near Spanish border, alternates sand beaches and rocky coves, while Canal du Midi, also UNESCO-classified, connects Toulouse to sea over nearly 240 kilometres bordered by centurion-old plane trees.
Pyrenees, south of the region, offer mountain lakes and summits like Pic du Midi, renowned for its astronomical observatory, while Toulouse, pink city, and Montpellier complete this diversity between mountain, plateaus and coast. Larzac plateaus, vast limestone plateaus UNESCO-classified for cultural landscapes, add a rural and pastoral dimension to this multi-faced region.
