Argelès-sur-Mer lies in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, in Occitanie, on the Côte Vermeille, where the Pyrenees plunge into the Mediterranean. Of the 33 campsites listed, the vast majority enjoy access to the sea, with a few additional establishments on a lake or riverbank, making this one of the densest campsite areas on the whole portal.
People camp in Argelès for its beaches, several kilometres of fine sand that make the town one of the most popular seaside destinations on the Catalan coast. Camping is almost an institution here, with a particularly wide and varied offering for every type of holidaymaker.
Between vine-growing plains and the first foothills of the Albères, Argelès-sur-Mer combines the sea, Catalan heritage and close proximity to villages like Collioure, a fairly complete package for a seaside stay in the south of France. The area's many campsites cover very different profiles, from right on the beach to spots closer to the surrounding vineyards.
The Racou district, set apart from the seaside centre, still has the charm of its colourful fishermen's cabins built straight onto the rock, one of the most photogenic spots in Argelès-sur-Mer. Fort Saint-Elme, on the heights between Argelès and Collioure, offers an open view over the Côte Vermeille.
The town spreads out at the foot of the Albères massif, the last stretch of the Pyrenees before the sea, which makes it possible to combine mid-mountain hiking with swimming in the same day. The old village of Argelès, further inland, keeps more of a Catalan feel than the modern seafront.
A few kilometres away, Collioure with its iconic bell tower perched over the sea remains a classic stop, as do the Banyuls vineyards clinging to the surrounding slopes. The Côte Vermeille takes its name from the colour of its rocks, a detail worth seeing at the end of the day when the light skims across the cliffs.
Other campsites less than 30 km away, in neighbouring towns.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
