Sainte-Marie-la-Mer lies on the Roussillon coast, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, a few kilometres north of Perpignan, on this part of the Mediterranean coast lined with long sandy beaches. The campsite listed here benefits from direct sea access, in an area where the coastline stays relatively flat and straight, typical of this part of the Gulf of Lion.
The town developed around two hubs, the historic village set back from the shore and the seaside resort built directly on the coast, a classic pattern on this Roussillon coastline where fishing and tourism have long existed side by side. There's still an active fishing harbour here, a feature that sets Sainte-Marie-la-Mer apart from other resorts more exclusively geared towards tourism.
The campsite here benefits from a setting open onto the Roussillon plain, with the first foothills of the Pyrenees in the background and, on clear days, the Canigou massif visible from the coast.
Sainte-Marie-la-Mer keeps an active fishing harbour, one of the few on the Roussillon coast to maintain a regular fleet, with direct fish sales depending on the catch. This maritime link remains one of the town's strong identities, alongside its more recent seaside role.
The beach, wide and less built-up than other resorts on the Catalan coast, stretches for several kilometres and allows for long seaside walks, with views of the Canigou on clear days. The old village, set inland, keeps a more Catalan atmosphere, with its narrow lanes around its church.
Sainte-Marie-la-Mer finally lies close to Perpignan, the historic capital of the Roussillon, and to neighbouring resorts such as Canet-en-Roussillon or Le Barcarès, making it easy to explore the whole Catalan coast, between coastal lagoons, beaches and a wine-growing hinterland, all the way to the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees.
