Brittany has 356 listed wateside campsites, and the sea rules absolutely: 314 establishments are installed by the sea, a figure reflecting the region's thousands of coast kilometres, between Emerald Coast, Pink Granite Coast and Morbihan gulf.
Far from coast, the region retains discreet smaller offering: 30 river-bank campsites, often along Vilaine, Blavet or Odet, as well as 10 on lake banks and 9 on pond banks, in Finistère or interior Morbihan lands, more rural and wooded.
This overwhelming maritime dominance clearly distinguishes Brittany from more continental regions, and is found at the level of its four coastal departments, Finistère, Côtes-d'Armor, Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine, all largely sea and sailing-focused.
Brittany offers one of France's most varied coasts: Pink Granite Coast in Côtes-d'Armor, with pink rocks sculpted by erosion, Pointe du Raz cliffs in Finistère, or Morbihan gulf, dotted with dozens of islands, some accessible on foot at low tide.
The region is rich in megalithic heritage unique in Europe, with Carnac menhir alignments, among the world's vastest megalithic ensembles, as well as historic cities like Saint-Malo, walled privateer town, or Vannes, with preserved medieval centre and timber-framed houses.
Breton islands, like Belle-Île-en-Mer, Ouessant or Glénan, complete this offering, as does Brocéliande forest, associated with Arthurian legends, for a more earthbound escape in the region's heart. Concarneau walled city and Douarnenez fishing port complete this picture of a Brittany both maritime and legendary.
