Var lists 128 campsites on waterside, and the data is unequivocal: 116 of them are installed by the sea. The department owes this coastal supremacy to Var's Côte d'Azur, from Maures Coast to Saint-Tropez gulf via Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël coast, where sand beaches and Estérel rocky coves border pine-shaded land.
Far from coast, Var retains a more discreet but real fringe: 13 river-bank campsites, often installed along Argens or its tributaries, in Var hinterland, and 11 on lake banks, particularly around Sainte-Croix lake and Verdon Gorges, at Alpes-de-Haute-Provence border.
This dual identity, maritime first but also fluvial and lacustrine on interior margins, allows choosing a stay closest to Mediterranean or, conversely, greener less-frequented setting in summer season.
Var coast concentrates among southern France's best-known sites: Saint-Tropez peninsula, Estérel massif with its red rocks plunging seaward, and Hyères islands (Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Levant island), accessible by boat from Giens peninsula and partly classified as a national park.
Inland, Maures massif offers perched villages like Grimaud, Bormes-les-Mimosas or Collobrières, renowned for its chestnuts and century-old chestnut grove. Further north, Verdon Gorges, one of Europe's greatest canyons, and Sainte-Croix lake, recognisable by turquoise waters, attract every summer hiking, kayaking and freshwater swimming enthusiasts.
Var is also Toulon and its roadstead, one of Europe's vastest and military port for centuries, as well as Provence vineyards, particularly Côtes de Provence appellation, covering much of the department and ranking among France's leading rosé producers.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
