Sanary-sur-Mer, in the Var department, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is a former fishing village whose seven listed campsites are all set by the sea. The harbour, still active, remains one of the best-preserved on the Var coast, with its fleet of colourful 'pointus' fishing boats.
Camping in Sanary-sur-Mer means enjoying a classic Mediterranean coastline, between rocky coves and small sandy beaches, in a town that has managed to keep its scale and authenticity despite being close to Toulon. The particularly mild climate has also long drawn visitors seeking southern light.
The town offers a good balance between the buzz of a genuine fishing harbour and the calm of a resort that hasn't given in to excessive development.
Sanary-sur-Mer's harbour, lined with palm trees and its famous pointed fishing boats, remains one of the most photogenic on the Var coast. It also has a particular history: in the 1930s, the town welcomed a significant community of German writers and intellectuals in exile, including Thomas Mann and Lion Feuchtwanger, fleeing the Nazi regime.
The Romanesque tower that overlooks the harbour, a former defensive structure, remains one of the historic centre's landmarks. The daily market on the quays gives visitors a chance to see the fish auction and buy fish freshly landed.
Not far away, Cap Sicié offers steep coastal trails and viewpoints over the whole Toulon roadstead, a natural extension for anyone wanting to venture beyond the town centre.
