Ramatuelle, a hilltop village in the Var department, belongs to the Saint-Tropez peninsula, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The campsites listed in the town are split between the seaside and the riverbank, a balance that reflects the local geography well: a coastal frontage on the Saint-Tropez bay on one side, a hilly hinterland crossed by small streams on the other.
Pitching a tent or setting up a mobile home here means enjoying Mediterranean access without the bustle of central Saint-Tropez, just a few kilometres away. The addresses set further inland, along a stream flowing down from the Maures massif, offer a more rural atmosphere, surrounded by vineyards.
This contrast between sea and river is nothing artificial: Ramatuelle's terrain, between wooded hills and a coastal corniche, makes it possible to choose a campsite depending on what the stay calls for, sea swimming or the coolness of a valley planted with Côtes de Provence AOC vines.
The village of Ramatuelle, classed among the most beautiful in France, keeps its stepped lanes, stone houses and façades covered in bougainvillea. Visitors wander as far as Place de l'Ormeau or the small cemetery where actor Gérard Philipe is buried, now a discreet pilgrimage site for film lovers.
The town is also home to a large part of Pampelonne beach, one of the best-known stretches of sand on the Côte d'Azur, lined with umbrella pines. Up on the heights, the Moulins de Paillas offer an open view over the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the surrounding vineyards.
Wine lovers will find several Côtes de Provence estates in Ramatuelle, some of whose plots run almost down to the coast. The rosé produced here owes as much to the soil as to being close to the sea.
Other campsites less than 30 km away, in neighbouring towns.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
