The Giens peninsula, in the Var department, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, extends the town of Hyères between two long sand spits, the tombolos, which enclose a former salt lagoon. All the campsites in the area benefit from direct sea access, with a choice between two coastal frontages with very different atmospheres.
Camping on the Giens peninsula means enjoying a rare geographical setup, with rougher sea on one side and calm water, sheltered by the peninsula's shape, on the other. Its position, at the tip of the Roadstead of Hyères, also makes it the natural boarding point for the Golden Islands, Porquerolles and Port-Cros.
The Giens peninsula's geographical distinctiveness lies in its two tombolos, these narrow sand spits that link it to the mainland and enclose the Étang des Pesquiers, a former salt-production site today classed as a protected natural area and frequented by many migratory birds.
From the harbour of La Tour Fondue, at the tip of the peninsula, boat shuttles regularly reach Porquerolles, the largest of the Îles d'Hyères, known for its clear waters and its listed fort. The peninsula itself offers several viewpoints over the Roadstead of Hyères, notably from the old village of Giens, perched on a former rocky island.
