Sainte-Maxime, in the Var department, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, faces Saint-Tropez across the gulf. The two campsites listed here are by the sea, benefiting from a more sheltered coastline, generally less crowded than its famous neighbour's.
Camping in Sainte-Maxime means choosing direct Mediterranean access with an open view over the whole Gulf of Saint-Tropez, while enjoying a more human-scale resort. The town keeps a strong Provençal character, with its palm-lined seafront and marina.

The Tour Carrée, a former sixteenth-century watchtower set on the seafront, today houses a small museum dedicated to local history and the tradition of Provençal jousting, practised in the harbour during summer. It remains one of the town's visual landmarks.
Sainte-Maxime's marina offers a fine viewpoint over the whole Gulf of Saint-Tropez, with the Saint-Tropez citadel clearly visible opposite. The palm-lined seafront promenade links several of the town's beaches along its whole length.
The town also benefits from a hilly hinterland, between vineyards and the Maures massif, offering varied walks once you leave the coast.
