Fréjus, in the Var department, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, is one of the oldest towns on the Côte d'Azur, founded by the Romans around a harbour now silted up. Six camping establishments are listed in the town, mostly by the sea, with a few also giving access to a lake and a river in the nearby hinterland.
People camp here for a large sandy beach stretching all the way to Saint-Raphaël, while enjoying a rare wealth of ancient heritage for this coastline. Fréjus thus combines the Mediterranean seaside, Roman history and closeness to the Estérel massif, in an atmosphere less glamorous than Saint-Tropez or Cannes.
It's a destination that appeals to those who want the Mediterranean without giving up a rich historical heritage to discover. Fréjus makes it possible to alternate between the beach and cultural visits without leaving the town, which remains fairly rare on this coastline, between Saint-Raphaël and the Estérel massif. The town suits an active holiday just as well as a more contemplative stay centred on its ancient heritage.
Fréjus preserves one of the most complete ancient ensembles in Provence: a Roman amphitheatre still used for shows, remains of the aqueduct and the naval harbour, and above all an episcopal complex including one of the oldest Christian baptisteries in France, dating from the fifth century. This ancient heritage sets Fréjus apart from the Var's other seaside resorts.
Fréjus beach, a long stretch of sand extending as far as Saint-Raphaël, faces the Estérel massif, whose red rocks plunge straight into the sea a little further east. The Argens river, which flows into the sea not far from the town, and the nature base laid out on the former airfield, round out a varied outdoor offering around Fréjus.
The more recently built old harbour of Fréjus-Plage finally rounds out this town of two faces, between an ancient city and a twentieth-century seaside resort. The nearby Estérel massif also offers hiking trails with sea views, between red rocks and umbrella pines.
