Vaucluse has 35 listed wateside campsites, and river very widely dominates: 30 establishments are installed on river banks, against only a few on pond, lake or sea banks. This department has no maritime coast, its inland position explains near-absence of coastal campsites in this census.
Concerned rivers are mainly Sorgue, with clear fresh waters from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, as well as Ouvèze and Rhone, bordering the department on its west fringe. These watercourses offer shaded camping land, often close to Provençal villages, where river swimming and canoeing are common season activities.
A handful of campsites complete offering on pond or lake banks, for stays seeking calmer water, in a department otherwise marked by garrigue landscapes, vines and lavender fields.
Vaucluse is inseparable from interior Provence: Mont Ventoux, called 'Provence's Giant', dominates the landscape and attracts cyclists and hikers, while hilltop villages of Luberon, like Gordes or Roussillon with its ochre cliffs, rank among the region's most photographed sites.
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, one of Europe's most powerful springs, gives rise to Sorgue and its emerald-green waters, while Avignon, papal city in the Middle Ages, retains its palace and famous Rhone bridge, sung in popular nursery rhymes.
The department is also known for lavender fields, in bloom around Sault plateau and neighbouring Valensole plateau in July, as well as renowned vineyards, particularly Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas on Rhone banks, ranking among the Rhone valley's most prestigious appellations.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
