Palavas-les-Flots, in the Hérault department, in Occitanie, is a seaside resort built at the mouth of the Lez, a few kilometres from Montpellier. The town benefits from direct Mediterranean access, with a sandy beach that runs along the whole seafront of the town.
Camping in Palavas means enjoying the atmosphere of a lively, popular seaside resort, heir to the paid-holiday era that made its name from the mid-twentieth century onward. The canal that crosses the town, alongside a pleasure-boat channel, shapes the urban landscape around fishing and pleasure boating. Being right next to Montpellier also makes it easy to step out of the seaside setting for a city excursion.
Palavas-les-Flots owes part of its fame to the caricatures of cartoonist Albert Dubout, who immortalised the resort and its bathers in the 1950s and 1960s; a statue and several murals recall this legacy in the town. The Notre-Dame-des-Flots chapel, built on stilts by the canal, remains a still-active place of maritime pilgrimage.
The Phare de la Méditerranée, a futuristic tower built in the 1980s, offers a panorama over the coast and the nearby lagoon. Palavas also keeps the memory of Doctor Charcot and the seaside sanatorium that marked its medical history in the nineteenth century. The canal, kept lively by fishing and pleasure boats, remains the resort's beating heart, between fish restaurants and evening strolls.
