Everything about the campsites by the water in Montpellier

Montpellier, the capital of the Hérault department in Occitanie, is not strictly speaking a coastal city: the historic centre lies a few kilometres from the beaches. But its territory touches several types of water, which is reflected in the diversity of campsites in the town and its immediate surroundings, between the sea, lakes, a river and a lagoon.

Most of the sites are on the coastal side, towards Palavas-les-Flots or Carnon, easily reachable from the city. The Lez, the river that crosses Montpellier, and the Étang de l'Or round out the picture with calmer settings, ideal for birdwatching and for walks less crowded than the seaside in peak season. This diversity makes Montpellier a practical base for anyone wanting to alternate between the beach, waterside walks and visiting a lively university city.

to discover

What to see and do in Montpellier

Montpellier's historic heart is best discovered around Place de la Comédie, an immense paved square that has served as a meeting point for generations. The lanes of the Écusson, the medieval centre, alternate between grand townhouses and small shaded squares, all the way to the Promenade du Peyrou and its triumphal arch.

Montpellier is also a long-standing university city, home to one of the oldest medical faculties in Europe, and a contemporary district, Antigone, designed by Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill in a very recognisable neoclassical style. The Lez, which crosses the city, offers pleasant walking and cycling routes all the way to the sea. For anyone camping in the area, being close to the Étang de l'Or and its marshes also makes it possible to get off the beaten track, with wilder nature just minutes from the coast.

our method

How we select every campsite

1

A verified criterion, not a promise

Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.

2

Reputation, backed by reviews

We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.

3

Direct booking, transparent pricing

You book directly with the campsite, no middleman or hidden markup. The price shown is the price you pay.
