The Lac du Salagou, a reservoir created in 1969 between Lodève and Clermont-l’Hérault, covers about 750 hectares among hills of red earth, the ruffes, and volcanic reliefs. Since July 2024, the Salagou and the Cirque de Mourèze have formed a Grand Site de France, welcoming some 550,000 visitors a year. Only two campsites in our selection are right on the lake; the other six sit by a river, the Lergue or the Hérault, 7 to 16 km away. So the choice is between a view over the red and blue waters of the Salagou and the comfort of a better-equipped campsite a quarter of an hour’s drive away.
Les Vailhés, on the north shore, is the Salagou campsite par excellence: 166 terraced pitches with lake views, the water starting just below the site, for swimming, fishing and water sports. For those arriving without a tent, it rents 20 family tents and 20 tiny houses. This two-star Onlycamp site lies at the heart of the Grand Site Salagou Mourèze: simple, natural and with a sunset view that is hard to beat.
In Octon, Le Village du Bosc overlooks the lake from a 70-hectare estate. It is a naturist campsite: 58 pitches, mobile homes and bungalows, a pool and naturist walks on the estate. Open from 27 April to 23 September 2026, it suits naturists who want peace and a view without leaving the shores of the Salagou.
In Lodève, about 7 km from the lake, Les Vals is a three-star site with two pools, a tennis court, a restaurant and show nights in season. Its mobile homes are fully equipped, and the campsite also hosts weddings.
A little further up, in Soubès, Les Sources is all about calm: 48 shady pitches with direct river access, 15 chalet-style mobile homes and 2 canvas bungalows rented for one-night stopovers. Heated pool with a view of the hills, trampoline, yoga sessions, library, snack bar and bread in the morning. The lake is about fifteen minutes away; open from April to mid-October, later than most.
In Canet, Les Rivières is the largest campsite in the selection: a 9-hectare wooded estate bordered by the Lergue, with 160 pitches including 98 rentals, mobile homes, chalets and gîtes. Water area with a heated pool, paddling pool and slides, bar-restaurant, entertainment and evening events, free Wi-Fi throughout, and direct access to the Hérault 150 metres away, with natural, shady banks. The Salagou is a quarter of an hour away; open from April to the end of September.
In Gignac, 25 minutes from the lake, Les Rives de l’Hérault is designed for families: a river beach a five-minute walk away, snack bar and ice-cream bar, a daily entertainment programme in summer, an inflatable pool and slide for children. Rentals include air-conditioned mobile homes with one to four bedrooms, sleeping up to 12, as well as a tipi and a Parisot caravan. VACAF accepted; open from 1 May to 14 September. Also in Gignac, on the banks of the Hérault, Camping du Pont completes the offer with its pool.
South of the lake, between the Salagou and Pézenas, Les Clairettes in Fontès is a 118-pitch campsite among vines and olive trees. The site is fenced and badge-accessed, a plus for families. Its fully renovated restaurant serves home cooking all year round, with a bar and grocery; pool and entertainment in summer, mobile homes for 4 to 8 people.
For the view and swimming in the lake, Les Vailhés is unbeatable, and Le Village du Bosc for naturists. With children, Les Rivières and Les Rives de l’Hérault offer a pool or water games, entertainment and a river close by. For peace and quiet, Les Sources and its 48 pitches. In the shoulder season, Les Sources stays open until 10 October: ideal for hiking around the lake and in the Cirque de Mourèze once the heat eases. In summer, the Salagou beaches are very busy: arrive early in the morning and respect the restricted areas, especially around the dam.
Around the lake, waymarked paths lead to the Cirque de Mourèze, a chaos of white dolomite explored on a loop of about 7.5 km, and to the village of Celles, partly abandoned when the valley was flooded and being restored step by step by the Grand Site. The water is ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing, and bathing water quality is checked every summer at several sites, such as Le Mas in Celles or the old road at Liausson.
