This volume is explained by the department's geography, associating a long ocean facade with two major islands, Île de Ré and Île d'Oléron, as well as a string of renowned seaside resorts between La Rochelle, Royan and Châtelaillon-Plage. Île de Ré, linked to the mainland by a bridge, seduces with its white villages with coloured shutters and salt marshes. Île d'Oléron, larger, alternates beaches, pine forests and oyster farms.
The department also houses Fort Boyard, a fortress built in open sea, made famous by a television show of the same name, visible from the coast between Oléron and Aix island.
