Le Barcarès, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, is a Roussillon seaside resort entirely turned towards the Mediterranean: the eleven campsites listed here are all linked to the sea, unsurprisingly for this town on the Catalan coast, in the Occitanie region, between coastal lagoons and long fine sandy beaches.
Le Barcarès' position, on a flat stretch of coast facing the Mediterranean, makes it a very beach-oriented camping destination: swimming, water sports and lazing about set the rhythm of the stay, with the Pyrenees chain visible in the background on clear days. The resort was largely developed from the 1960s onward as part of the tourist development of the Languedoc-Roussillon coast.
Le Barcarès owes part of its fame to the Lydia, a former transatlantic liner deliberately run aground on the beach in 1967, since converted into a cultural venue and now one of the resort's visual symbols. It's a curiosity found in no other town on the Catalan coast.
Le Barcarès beach stretches for several kilometres of fine sand, ideal for swimming as well as board sports, while the marina is home to much of the summer activity. Being close to Perpignan and the first foothills of the Pyrenees makes it easy to alternate between beach days and excursions into the Catalan hinterland.
