Gard offers 71 listed campsites, very largely focused on rivers: 63 establishments line a watercourse, only about a dozen benefit from sea access and two are on a lake bank. This Cevennes and Rhone department owes this makeup to its numerous rivers, the Gardon, Cèze and neighbouring Ardèche, which carve gorges and feed natural rock pools much sought in summer.
Gardon gorges, classified as France Grand Site, concentrate significant part of the wateside camping offering, with pebble beaches and crystal-clear waters conducive to swimming. Further north, Cèze and its tributaries offer similar setting, wilder and more wooded.
Gard's coastal fringe, around Grau-du-Roi and Gardoise Camargue, completes the offering with a few seaside campsites, in a landscape of lagoons and ponds quite different from the rest of the department. Between garrigue, vineyards and Roman heritage, Gard offers rare landscape diversity for a single territory.
Gard stands out for exceptional ancient heritage, with Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Nîmes arenas, one of Europe's best-preserved Roman amphitheatres. Uzès town, with its duchy and old lanes, completes this discovery of Gard heritage.
Gardon gorges and Cevennes, also UNESCO-classified as cultural landscape for agropastoralism, offer hiking routes and river swimming sites much appreciated in summer. Further south, Gardoise Camargue, around Aigues-Mortes, fortified medieval city, opens onto marshes and ponds typical of Rhone delta landscape.
Between Costières de Nîmes vineyards and fragrant garrigue, Gard offers a mosaic of landscapes to explore, from Camargue coast to Cevennes foothills.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
