Aigues-Mortes lies in the Gard department, in Occitanie, right in the heart of the Camargue gardoise. The 4 campsites listed here all enjoy access to the sea, the town backing onto the lagoons and the Mediterranean coastline despite sitting a few kilometres from the shoreline itself.
The town was built in the Middle Ages as a seaport, before the Rhône's silt deposits gradually pushed it away from the shore. Today people camp here to enjoy both the nearby beaches, such as the Espiguette, and a landscape of salt marshes and lagoons that is fairly unique among the campsite areas on this portal.
Between medieval ramparts and the wide flat expanses of the Camargue, Aigues-Mortes offers a rare combination of strong historical heritage and a seaside stay, with surrounding nature that is a change from the classic coastal resorts. The horses and bulls of the Camargue, raised on the local manades, remain a powerful image of this land caught between earth and water.
Aigues-Mortes is entirely encircled by thirteenth-century ramparts, a rare example of a fortified town so well preserved in France. It was from this port, now far from the shore, that Louis IX (Saint Louis) set off on the Crusades, an event that left a lasting mark on the town's history.
The Tour de Constance, at the corner of the ramparts, can be visited and offers an open view over the surrounding salt marshes and the Camargue gardoise. These salt pans, still in operation, produce the famous Camargue salt and are home to colonies of pink flamingos visible from the paths that run alongside the ponds.
The Rhône to Sète canal borders the town and allows for walks or bike rides towards the nearby lagoons. Between ramparts, salt and birds, Aigues-Mortes offers heritage that is both historical and natural, quite different from the other coastal destinations in the area. The gardians, Camargue's traditional horsemen, still carry on today the customs linked to raising bulls and horses in this region.
