Le Grau-du-Roi, in the Gard department, is a former fishing harbour turned seaside resort at the edge of the Camargue, in Occitanie. The campsite listed here is linked to the sea, in keeping with the town's position, opening directly onto the Gulf of Lion between the Camargue lagoons and the Languedoc plain.
The town is home to Port Camargue, the largest single-built marina in Europe, a sign of how important boating is to local identity. Camping in Le Grau-du-Roi makes it possible to enjoy direct access to the Mediterranean while staying right at the edge of the Camargue landscapes, between bulls, horses and salt lagoons.
Le Grau-du-Roi's fishing harbour remains active, with its fish auction and fish restaurants set up along the channel that runs through the town, an atmosphere still fairly down-to-earth despite tourist development. Port Camargue, just to the south, lines up several thousand mooring berths around homes built in tiers down towards the sea.
L'Espiguette beach, at the far end of the town, unfolds several kilometres of sand and wild dunes largely spared from development, a stark contrast with the heart of the resort. The nearby Camargue, with its marshes, pink flamingos and bull-raising manades, naturally rounds out a stay in Le Grau-du-Roi.
