Le Palais, in the Morbihan department, is the main town of Belle-Île-en-Mer, the largest of the Breton islands, off the coast from Quiberon. The campsite listed here is naturally linked to the sea, since the whole town is on an island, in the Brittany region, reachable only by sea crossing from the mainland.
Camping in Le Palais means choosing a genuinely island-based stay, with the ocean ever-present all around the island. The town concentrates most of Belle-Île's activity, between its main harbour and its citadel, while remaining a practical starting point for exploring the island's other villages.
Le Palais is dominated by its Citadelle Vauban, a fortress built in the seventeenth century to protect the island from English attacks, today open to visitors and offering a panorama over the harbour and the Iroise Sea. The harbour itself, kept lively by the regular arrival of ferries from Quiberon, is the town's beating heart.
From Le Palais, the whole of Belle-Île-en-Mer can be explored by car or by bike, between the Aiguilles de Port-Coton, rock formations sculpted by erosion that inspired the painter Claude Monet, and the wild coves of the Côte Sauvage on the island's western side. A stay here remains inseparable from the sea crossing that sets the island tone for the whole trip.
