Narbonne, in the Aude department, in Occitanie, brings together several faces of water: the coast towards Narbonne-Plage, coastal lagoons and a network of canals and waterways that cross the town's land. This diversity is reflected in the spread of campsites, split between the sea, a body of water, a river and a lagoon, with no single type really dominating.
A former Roman city and historic Mediterranean port, Narbonne long lived off its relationship with water, before the coastline receded and the town found itself several kilometres from today's shore. Camping in this area makes it easy to alternate between the beach at Narbonne-Plage, walks along the Canal de la Robine, listed as UNESCO heritage as a link in the Canal du Midi, and discovering the lagoons that border the Mediterranean, rich in birdlife and garrigue scenery.
Narbonne preserves major remains from its Roman past, when the city was one of the most prosperous in Gallia Narbonensis, the first Roman province outside Italy. The Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur cathedral, unfinished but impressive in scale, overlooks the historic centre alongside the Archbishops' Palace.
The Canal de la Robine crosses the town from end to end and invites a walk or bike ride, between moored barges and nineteenth-century covered market halls where a lively market is still held. At the edge of Narbonne, the Étang de Bages-Sigean spreads out a landscape of garrigue and mudflats ideal for watching pink flamingos and other waterbirds. On the coast, Narbonne-Plage offers a wide sandy strip typical of the Aude coastline, open and windy, popular with board-sport enthusiasts.
