Port-la-Nouvelle, in the Aude department, in Occitanie, is a coastal town organised around its harbour, one of the main commercial ports on the Gulf of Lion. The town benefits from direct sea access, with a wide sandy beach that stretches for several kilometres south of the harbour.
Camping in Port-la-Nouvelle means choosing a coastline still fairly spared from mass tourism, open and windy, particularly popular with board-sport enthusiasts. Being close to the neighbouring coastal lagoons adds a natural dimension to this seaside stay, between the beach, a fishing harbour and protected areas.
Port-la-Nouvelle's harbour, both a commercial and a fishing port, shapes the whole identity of the town, with industrial and fishing activity still very much present. The large beach that stretches south of the harbour, regularly swept by the tramontane wind, makes the town a recognised spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Right nearby, the Étang de Bages-Sigean, a vast protected natural area, draws birdwatching enthusiasts with its pink flamingos and its garrigue and mudflat landscapes. The Canal de la Robine flows into the sea at Port-la-Nouvelle, after crossing Narbonne, offering a view of where a historic waterway meets the Mediterranean.
