Port Leucate, in the Aude department, in Occitanie, is a seaside resort built from scratch in the 1960s as part of the tourist development of the Languedoc-Roussillon coast. Most of the town's campsites benefit from direct sea access, complemented by addresses on the Étang de Leucate, which separates the resort from the historic village.
Camping in Port Leucate means enjoying modern seaside architecture designed for mass tourism from the outset, with a vast seafront and a large marina. The setup between the open sea and an inland lagoon makes it possible to practise both classic swimming and board sports, for which the region is particularly renowned.
Port Leucate is one of the resorts born from the Mission Racine, a vast development plan for the Languedoc coast launched in the 1960s, whose characteristic architecture can still be seen in the pyramid-shaped residences that line the seafront.
The Étang de Leucate, separated from the sea by a thin strip of sand, is one of the most renowned windsurfing and kitesurfing spots in Europe, thanks to steady winds and a sheltered body of water. The older village of Leucate, perched on the nearby cliffs, offers a contrast with the seaside resort and a viewpoint over the whole Aude coastline, reaching to the Pyrenees on clear days.
