Roscoff, in the Finistère department, in Brittany, is a town entirely turned towards the sea. The campsites in the area are all set by the sea, on this granite headland battered by winds and softened by the Gulf Stream, which explains the region's particularly mild climate for such a northerly latitude.
The town has always lived to the rhythm of the Channel: a fishing harbour, a commercial harbour and a marina all sit side by side, and maritime activity still shapes daily life. Camping in Roscoff means enjoying a rugged coastline, pink rock coves and iodine-rich air renowned for its benefits, the origin of the town's thalassotherapy tradition.
The town also faces the Île de Batz, reachable in a few minutes by boat, adding an easy excursion to any camping stay in the area.
Roscoff owes part of its fame to its famous pink onions, exported to England since the nineteenth century by the well-known Johnnies on bicycles, a story told at the Maison des Johnnies et de l'Oignon de Roscoff. The town also keeps a fine architectural unity, with its granite shipowners' houses and the Notre-Dame-de-Croaz-Batz church, remarkable for its Renaissance bell tower.
The harbour is home to a well-known biological station, which has studied the wildlife and plant life of the Channel for more than a century, evidence of the town's long-standing bond with its coastline. Just nearby, the Roscoff exotic garden surprises with plants from the southern hemisphere, which grow here thanks to the mild climate.
From the harbour, it's easy to catch a boat to the Île de Batz for a walk or bike ride, between white sandy beaches and the Georges-Delaselle botanical garden.
