Quimper, the capital of the Finistère department, in Brittany, developed at the confluence of two rivers, the Odet and the Steïr, which still run through the town centre. The campsite listed in the town benefits from this riverside setting, far from the coast, although the Odet estuary, sometimes nicknamed the prettiest river in France, leads directly to the sea a few kilometres further on.
Camping in Quimper means choosing a human-scale city, the historic capital of Cornouaille, where the flower-lined quays of the Odet and the half-timbered houses of the medieval centre make for a pleasant urban setting. Being close to the estuary also makes it possible, for those who want it, to easily reach the sea by following the river towards Bénodet.
The Saint-Corentin cathedral, with its two Gothic spires overlooking the town centre, remains Quimper's most recognisable landmark, surrounded by a district of half-timbered houses among the best preserved in Brittany. The quays of the Odet, lined with lime trees and flowers all year round, offer a pleasant walk at the heart of the city.
Quimper is also known for its faience pottery, made in the town since the seventeenth century and recognisable by its hand-painted designs depicting figures in Breton costume; a production site can still be visited on the outskirts. The city, the historic capital of Cornouaille, also serves as a gateway to the Odet estuary and its wooded banks, all the way to Bénodet and the sea.
