Brest, in the Finistère department (Brittany), is built around an immense roadstead, one of the largest in Europe, and crossed by the Penfeld, a small river that long shaped the town and its naval dockyard. Of the three campsites listed, two face the sea and one this waterway, reflecting this dual frontage.
The Brest roadstead, a vast body of water sheltered from the ocean by the Crozon peninsula, offers a very different setting from the rocky, wind-battered coast found further out, around the Pointe du Raz or the Iroise Sea.
Staying around Brest means enjoying both access to the Iroise Sea, listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and a rich maritime heritage, between a naval port, a marina and the steep Penfeld valley.
Brest was largely rebuilt after the Second World War, which gives it a distinctive urban architecture, but its maritime heritage remains intact: the dockyard and naval port still occupy the banks of the Penfeld, overlooked by the keep of Château de Brest, one of the town's oldest monuments.
Océanopolis, a major ocean discovery centre set up in the marina, is today one of the most visited sites in Brittany, with its three pavilions dedicated to temperate, tropical and polar environments.
The Recouvrance district, linked to the centre by the Pont de Recouvrance, keeps the atmosphere of old Brest with its steep lanes and the Tanguy Tower, while the roadstead itself is best discovered by boat, with views over the Crozon peninsula and the Brest channel.
