Mercantour national park, less than an hour from coast, protects a wild Alpine massif, famous for Merveilles valley and its prehistoric rock carvings, as well as preserved mountain fauna, notably wolves, naturally returned in the 1990s.
Var and Vésubie gorges, cutting through the hinterland, offer spectacular landscapes and summer river swimming sites appreciated just dozens of kilometres from the Mediterranean.
