Castillon, in the Alpes-Maritimes department (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), is a village in the hinterland of Nice, overlooking the coast between Menton and Sospel. Of the three campsites listed, two benefit from a view of or access to the sea and one from a river running down the valley.
The village, entirely rebuilt in the twentieth century after being destroyed by an earthquake and then by the war, overlooks a steep valley typical of the Menton hinterland, between Mediterranean relief and the immediate closeness of the coast.
Camping around Castillon means choosing a mid-mountain setting just minutes from the Mediterranean, between panoramas over the coast and the coolness of a valley fed by a small river.
The village of Castillon was entirely rebuilt in Provençal style in the twentieth century, after the original village was destroyed by an earthquake at the end of the nineteenth century and then by fighting during the Second World War. Its lanes are now home to several craft workshops.
Perched on the heights, the village offers open views over the Mediterranean coast, from Menton to the Italian border, a panorama that remains one of the site's main draws.
The valley running down to the sea, cut deep into the hinterland behind Nice, can be explored on foot as far as the neighbouring town of Sospel, with its old town and medieval toll bridge, or towards the Col de Castillon, which links the valley to the coast.
