Vosges has 32 listed campsites, very widely dominated by lake bank: 20 establishments, far ahead of pond bank (8) and river bank (3). The Vosges massif, with its glacial-origin lakes such as Gérardmer, Longemer or Retournemer, explains this very large majority share of lake campsites in a resolutely mountain department.
This 'department of lakes' identity clearly distinguishes Vosges from its Grand Est neighbours, more focused on river or pond. The few river or pond bank addresses are found rather in the plain, in the department's west part, less mountainous and more agricultural.
Camping in Vosges is first and foremost enjoying a mountain lake, in a forested and rolling setting different from flatter landscapes of other Grand Est departments, with relief conducive to year-round hiking, summer as winter.
