Xonrupt-Longemer lies in the Vosges department, in Grand Est, at the heart of the Vosges massif, a few kilometres from Gérardmer. The campsite listed here benefits from access to Lake Longemer, one of the large natural glacial lakes that have made the reputation of this part of the Hautes-Vosges, far from any coastline.
The town stretches along the shores of this lake, surrounded by fir and spruce forests, a mid-mountain landscape typical of the Vosges, where the altitude brings cooler air than elsewhere in summer and snowy scenery in winter. Lake Longemer, less busy than nearby Lake Gérardmer, keeps a more natural, unspoilt character.
Camping in Xonrupt-Longemer makes it possible to enjoy a mountain setting by the water, between lake swimming, hikes on the surrounding peaks and being right next to Gérardmer, the Vosges massif's leading tourist resort, in any season of the year.
Xonrupt-Longemer draws its identity from Lake Longemer, a glacial lake of around 75 hectares nestled among the Vosges forests, where swimming and light water sports, such as sailing or pedal boating, are possible in the summer season. Its partly wooded shores lend themselves to quiet walks with views over the surrounding peaks.
The Col de la Schlucht, a historic crossing point between Lorraine and Alsace, lies a few kilometres away, giving access to the Vosges ridges and their sweeping panoramas over both sides of the massif. The surrounding high pastures, or 'hautes chaumes', these high-altitude meadows typical of the Vosges peaks, can be explored on foot in summer.
Gérardmer, the nearest town with its own lake and lively market, rounds out the area's tourist offering, while winter turns Xonrupt-Longemer into a base for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, the Hautes-Vosges being equipped with many Nordic trails around the lake.
