Aube has 8 listed campsites, very largely installed on lake banks: 6 establishments out of 8, against a single river-bank address. This strong dominance is explained by the presence of the Forêt d'Orient Regional Natural Park, which brings together several large artificial lakes at the gates of Troyes, originally arranged to regulate the floods of the Seine and its tributaries.
Lake-bank camping is therefore, by far, the dominant practice in the department, far ahead of rivers like the Seine or Aube, which cross the territory but concentrate few listed establishments compared to the developed lake areas.
For lovers of bodies of water and freshwater water activities, Aube is one of Grand Est's most coherent departments, with an offering almost exclusively focused on its lakes and their monitored beaches in season. This specialisation makes it a readable and coherent destination for families seeking water activities.
Forêt d'Orient Regional Natural Park, located at the gates of Troyes, brings together three large artificial lakes, Lac d'Orient, Lake Temple and Lake Amance, surrounded by game-rich forests and renowned for watching migrating birds, particularly grey cranes passing in thousands in autumn.
Troyes, the department's prefecture, stands out for its historic centre with colourful timber-framed houses and Gothic churches, witnesses to its rich merchant past and the champagne tradition, of which Aube is one of the great producer terroirs alongside neighbouring Marne.
Between lakes, forests and medieval heritage, Aube offers a setting both natural and cultural less than two hours from Paris, appreciated for weekends as for longer stays in any season. Proximity to Burgundy and Champagne further widens excursion possibilities for campers settled in the department.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
