Haut-Rhin has 23 listed campsites, with clear dominance of river bank (12 establishments), followed by lake bank (5) then pond bank (2). The Rhine, the Thur or the Fecht, descending from the Vosges to the Alsatian plain, explain this large share of campsites installed on river banks, in relief more marked than in neighbouring Bas-Rhin and closer to the mountain.
Lakes, more present than in Bas-Rhin, concentrate mainly in the Vosges massif west of the department, where several mountain bodies of water of glacial origin complement the offering for camping at higher altitude, in the heart of conifer forests and alpine pastures.
Haut-Rhin thus combines fluvial valleys of the Alsatian plain and mid-mountain lakes, for a sufficiently diverse wateside campsite offering in Grand Est, suited as much to vineyard lovers as to hikers seeking altitude.
Colmar, with its Petite Venise quarter and colourful timber-framed houses, is one of the most-visited stops on the Alsatian wine route, crossing the Haut-Rhin vineyard between Riquewihr, Eguisheim and Kaysersberg, villages classified among France's most beautiful.
The Vosges massif, west of the department, culminates at Grand Ballon and is home to several mountain bodies of water of glacial origin, appreciated for hiking and viewpoints over the Alsatian plain and the German Black Forest, visible on clear days from the ridges.
Mulhouse, an industrial city reconverted, offers rich museum heritage around automobiles and textiles, while the Rhine, to the east, marks the border with Germany and very close Switzerland, just a few kilometres from Basel. The Alsatian vineyard, lining the foot of sub-Vosges hills, completes this landscape between mountain, vines and Rhenish plain, extending to the outskirts of Mulhouse.
