Pays de la Loire has 329 listed wateside campsites, with clear maritime dominance: 263 establishments are installed by the sea, along Vendée coast and Loire-Atlantique Atlantic coast, between Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Noirmoutier island and La Baule.
Pond and river share more modest but real offering share, with respectively 44 and 43 campsites, notably along Loire itself, crossing the region east to west to its estuary, as well as Sarthe, Mayenne and Vilaine. Lake completes with 23 establishments, mainly in Anjou and Mayenne.
This coastal dominance, mainly driven by Vendée, should not hide Loire's importance in the region, which retains, more inland, non-negligible fluvial offering between Anjou and Sarthe. This diversity makes Pays de la Loire a region where coast and fluvial valleys complement each other for wateside camping enthusiasts.
Pays de la Loire offers renowned Vendée coast, with great sand beaches and Noirmoutier island, linked to mainland by Gois, a road submerged at high tide, as well as Puy du Fou, one of France's most-visited historical theme parks.
Loire, UNESCO World Heritage classified on part of its course, crosses the region at Angers, former Anjou dukes' capital with medieval castle and famous Apocalypse tapestry, before reaching ocean at Saint-Nazaire, city marked by its shipbuilding history.
Le Mans town, renowned for its 24 Hours automobile race, and Angevin vineyard, known for white and rosé wines, complete this region's diversity between ocean and Loire valley. Nantes city, former Brittany dukes' capital and today known for its Machines of the Island, adds cultural and creative dimension to this region.
Every by the water campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
