Guérande, in the Loire-Atlantique department, is inseparable from its salt marshes: the town lends its name to Guérande salt, hand-harvested across hundreds of hectares of salt pans between the peninsula and the coast. The medieval town of Guérande has kept the whole of its ramparts intact, a rare case in France: you can still walk all the way around them, fortified gates and turrets included, before wandering the cobbled lanes of the old town. It's one of the best-preserved fortified towns in western France.

The town also borders the Traict du Croisic, a vast body of water home to rich birdlife. Between medieval ramparts, salt marshes and being right next to the Guérande peninsula and La Baule, Guérande offers dense heritage for such a small area.
